The night was clear, and the moon shone especially brightly that night. I began to do my homework. It being only my first year in college, I was still new to the building, and the environment. I had gotten lost just about everyday in the maze of hallways linked together, door after door. I lay on bed in my dorm room with my room mate, exhausted from all the rushing and working from the day, my mind strained.
“So, do you think it will snow tonight?” My room mate Amy asked.
I rubbed the window until the outside was visible. Examining the sky, I could see dark nimbostratus clouds. I said I thought it was possible. Not too long after, we decided to go to sleep, and turned the lights off.
After a few minutes, a loud screech unlike any other awoke me. It was so unearthly, that I was tempted to run outside, and check it out. My instincts told me not to, but I disobeyed. After navigating through the long stretch of hallways, I finally reached the door. Outside, I saw that the clouds had gotten worse. Not to mention, it had gotten bitter cold. Barefoot, I decided to go get some shoes. But before I could do so, I heard the screech again. My heart racing, I didn’t bother for the shoes. I grabbed a near by part of the rain gutter that had fallen off. Armed with a dilapidated piece of metal, and dressed in pajamas, I set out into the extensive woods that enveloped the entire back yard of the school.
I heard the sound again, which sent chills up my spine. My hands were numb, and it was starting to get late. Not wanting to lose sight of my destination, I tried to keep focus. I followed the gut wrenching sound, my mind still set. It then started to snow. At first, I didn’t panic, but by the time the snow had reached my ankles in only ten minutes, I began to worry. The screech began to howl sporadically. Some of it’s howls sounded as if they were crying for help, while other sounded as if it were stating its dominance. Still, I persisted to go into what seemed like the endless woods.
Eventually, my legs gave in, and I fell over, but the sound was less distant now. Infact, it felt like this creature was right in front of me. I weakly looked up, only to be greeted by two large, red, eyes. Its scream rattled my eardrums. The sound even made my eyes water, out of fear. Right as it was about to skin me, a hunter came. The sound of his gun scared the creature off. I was surprised. How could a 15 foot creature be scared of a little bullet? Still, I wasn’t complaining.
“Looks like you met Red Eye,” The long slender, yet bold man said, “I was just out huntin,’ and came across you. Yeah, he’s a scary one, but a mighty one, that too. He could maul a sheep in a split second, that’s what happened to that farmer over there’s livestock.”
I guess I looked shaken up, so he offered to drive me home. I gladly agreed. On the way back to college, he explained that nearly everyone who encounters Red Eye, almost never makes it out alive. I was lucky. He then walked me back to campus. I thanked him.
“You’re welcome, but you should have never been there, tangled in curiosity. Man, kids these days, they don’t know their boundaries.”
After telling me that, he trudged back to his car, the snow slowing him down. I don’t think I could ever repay him for what he did that night.
