A short exerpt from an essay I made, and Angelo.

They're quiet, sweet, humble, and funny. What am I talking about? If you don't know what I'm talking about, you obviously haven't read the title. Lately, I've been thinking, if there were no cats, where would we be? Most likely, no where. Cats, or Felis catus, have been around for centuries. In ancient Egypt, these frisky felines were known as the "mau." Prior to their now tame, and funny antics, cats were wild, and untamed. By being able to perform feats such as killing a cobra, or vermin, they became the emblem of grace and poise. Worshiped by Egyptians, they were praised, and given jewelry in hieroglyphics.

Moving on, cats have a variety of communication. Varying from purrs, meows, and growls, each one has a certain purpose. A meow may come across as a voluntary "hello," but may actually be a cry of pain. Though, most people can differentiate the meows, and decode them successfully. For example, most are familiar with a growl, a sign of discontent, and displeasure.
